Our Cultures, Our Community- Glenview Honors Diversity at Celebration of Cultures

Two young girls, one wearing a striped top and the other a floral patterned shirt, are smiling and standing together in what appears to be a school or institutional setting with a plain wall in the background.

Glenview Dual Language Immersion Magnet came alive with color, flavor, and community spirit during our Celebration of Cultures event on November 20. This occasion brought together students, families, and staff to honor the rich cultural diversity that makes Glenview such a vibrant place to learn.

The celebration highlighted the 34 different countries that make up our student body, each represented at tables hosted by Glenview families. Every table proudly displayed the country’s flag alongside a country fact poster created by fifth grade students. From fun facts to information about languages and landmarks, the posters offered a student-led learning experience for all who attended.

The evening’s energy was elevated by two special cultural performances. Wright Middle School's Mariachi Band filled the room with vibrant music, showcasing the dedication and talent of young musicians carrying forward a cherished tradition. The celebration also welcomed Danza Tonanztin de Smyrna, whose Aztec dancers captivated the audience with rhythmic movement, colorful regalia, and stories of cultural heritage expressed through dance. Together, these performances brought the richness of Latino and Indigenous traditions to life.

One of the most popular aspects of the celebration was the array of traditional foods shared by families. Parents prepared and served dishes from their home countries, giving students and visitors a rare opportunity to taste authentic recipes from around the world. The room buzzed with excitement as attendees sampled everything from savory snacks to sweet desserts, all while learning about the food they were tasting.

To further capture the spirit of unity, teachers offered an interactive art station where students painted their hands in the colors of a country’s flag of their choice. They then added their handprints to a collaborative mural, a colorful symbol of the global connections at Glenview.

In the spirit of giving and community support, 600 food boxes donated by The ReMix TN were available for families to take home as we enter the Thanksgiving holiday. This generous contribution helped ensure that the joy of the celebration extended beyond the event and into the homes of our families.

The Celebration of Cultures showcased not only the global backgrounds of Glenview’s community but also the school’s commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and multilingual learning. It was a powerful reminder that every culture enriches the Glenview experience, and that when we come together, we create something truly beautiful.
